Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
We have mentioned that Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a type of anxiety disorder. People with OCD have repeated unwanted thoughts, feelings, sensations, and mental images. These people engage in certain mental acts or physical behaviors as a response to those obsessive cognitions. When a person with OCD does a repeated action, it is often in an effort to get rid of obsessive thoughts. The action the person takes only provides temporary relief, and they may feel obligated to take another action soon. If the person does not take action that he or she feels compelled to take, he or she could face considerably heightened levels of anxiety. Compulsions can be disruptive to a person’s life, so if one does not seek treatment for OCD, their ability to function in the workplace or in school could be greatly affected.
Other types of disorders, such as depression or eating disorders, accompany OCD. It can appear during childhood, during adolescence, or even in early adulthood. When OCD is manifested in adolescences or adulthood, it may be easier for the person to cope with it than when it is manifested in childhood. Children need to be tested for symptoms of OCD because if those symptoms are missed, the child could experience many problems during his or her developmental years, and he or she may never get to be a fully functional member of society .
OCD can be treated using both pharmacological and behavioral therapies. While one method or the other may be used in some cases, the most effective method of treatment is the combination of both methods. In recent years, clinical trials for drugs that have an effect on serotonin levels in neurotransmitters have shown positive results when it comes to reducing OCD symptoms. There are many drugs in the market, as well as others under development, and both children and adult OCD patients can take advantage of these medications (psychiatrists and psychologists can prescribe various drugs at different dosages based on their assessment of the severity of the OCD). Cognitive behavioral therapy is the most effective non-pharmacological therapy for people with OCD, and it is often used alone without being paired with drugs.
